We do not serve refreshments or appeal to the appetites of men. Our purpose is not to please men with luxurious surroundings or use any kind of entertainment which is only to please men. The Gospel is the only power that draws man to God, not entertainment (Romans 1:16). We have been instructed by the words of Jesus to worship Him in spirit and in truth (John 4:23-24). God is spirit and is worshiped as a spiritual being. This means we must have the proper attitude with a rational and intellectual response. To worship God in truth is not just to please ourselves, but to worship according to the pattern we have been given in the New Testament (Philippians 3:17, John 17:17). Only those who worship God in truth are assured of divine approval. There is also unacceptable worship that is not in harmony with God’s will (Matthew 15:1-9).
